Tour de Donut
The
Tour de Donut
bicycle race is a spoof of the "Tour de France". The "race" starts with a
mass start and is led/paced to the boundary of Staunton IL by the Staunton
Police. The route has varied slightly from year-to-year do to road
conditions/construction and is over rolling terrain with two donut stops.
Riders must stop at the two checkpoint stations (donut stops). Donut
consumption is not mandatory, however, a five minute bonus is awarded for
each donut consumed and recorded. After the race placement awards are
presented for best Elapsed Time, Adjusted Time and Most Donuts Eaten.
Door/Attendance prizes and a grand prize are also awarded.
The Tour was originated by the Mid-America Bicycle Club and was inherited by
the McDonnell Douglas Employee Bicycle Club which shortly thereafter became the
Boeing Employee Bicycle Club (St. Louis). The
Tour de Donut
is normally held on the 2nd Saturday of July - so that it occurs during the
Tour de France. Do to the nature and popularity of the event, race day registration was discontinued a couple of years ago.
Registration has been via this web site and word-of-mouth. Again in
2007 we have a true web based registration that will be able to handle
charge card payments and release forms without the need to print and mail (aka snail
mail). Late, lost or otherwise mishandled registrations have always been
an issue and we hope that this will alleviate these problems.
The start/finish of the
Tour de Donut
was originally at Staunton High School, later it moved to the Elementary School
next door. In 2004 the start/finish moved to Staunton City Park, this
location gives us more room to spread out and more parking area. Race
number pick-up opens at 8:00AM CDT with the mass start at 9:00AM CDT, to
facilitate the prize/awards the race timing officially ends at 12:00/noon CDT
and award ceremony at 12:30PM CDT.
